Thanks for the insights. Personally, I find speed disappears quicker than endurance. This could be explained by the fact that I have been running for a long time so have "accumulated" endurance and am getting older so PBs are already a thing of the past. The positive thing that I have realised over the years is that getting my fitness back does not take as long as it took to build in the first place.

Great read! And sometimes pauses are absolutely neccessary to gain endurance and strength again. Always depends on where you are standing and where you want to go, but losing "some" fitness should be no problem if you are consistent (e.g.) runner.
